Lessons to Learn From the World’s Richest People – #5 Carlos Slim Helu


Carlos Slim Helu, the world's fifth richest man, was born to Julian Slim Haddad and Linda Helu Atta on 28th January 1940 in Mexico City. Famous for his entrepreneurship, he at his very early age learned the business from his father and have worked along with him during his teens. By the 1960s, his worth was around US$40 million and growing. Though he invested in many different businesses, his prime focus was on construction and real estate.

Slim, during the 1970s, continued to acquire many companies in different industries and grew his empire. Later, in the 1980s he unified all his business under a single parent organization called "Gruppo Galas". Apart from all other acquisition, Slim's greatest acquisition was "Telekom Austria".  He also shares 17% of The New York Times and 50% of The Hershey Company."

He was married to Soumaya Domit in 1967 and have six children. After his wife passed away, he underwent heart surgery and also took a break by passing his business affairs to his children during the 1990s.

Being the richest man, Slim regularly involved in philanthropic works and have donated almost half of his earnings to projects involving in areas like education, health, and arts. He was given rank five in the Forbes world's biggest givers list.

He says,

“Money is not a goal. The goal is to make companies grow, develop, be competitive, be in different areas, be efficient to have a great human team inside the company.”
